Experimental and Numerical Investigations of Octagonal High-Strength Steel Tubular Stub Columns under Combined Compression and Bending

An experimental and numerical study on the octagonal high-strength steel tubular stub columns under combined compression bending is presented in this paper. Octagonal column specimens with different sizes were prepared. Experiments performed these concentric or eccentric compression, which induced various combinations of structures. In addition, a through finite-element modeling was also conducted. A model developed validated to be capable accurately replicating results. Subsequent parametric studies using structures wide range dimensions bending. Based both results, applicability existing design approaches European American Standards subject evaluated. The evaluation results show that from standards, especially interaction relationship, provide conservative strength predictions can safely applied
